New Head of Youth Outreach

UKRA can today announce some changes to its Youth Outreach scheme; Phil Charlesworth – long time head of the programme – is stepping down to concentrate on other commitments and will be replaced by Rod Stevenson.
Phil was instrumental in forwarding the aims of the Youth Outreach programme during his tenure and UKRA would like to extend its thanks for his sterling effort over the past few years. In addition to his work for us Phil is to be applauded for his achievements in getting rocketry on to the approved activities list of the Air Cadet Organisation, for his input and support of the Scout Association's Astronautics badge and, of course, for his founding of the UK Aerospace Youth Rocketry Challenge.
Clearly Phil leaves some pretty big boots to fill, but UKRA is happy and confident that Rod Stevenson will meet the challenge of progressing the Youth Outreach objectives and we would like to express our gratitude to him for agreeing to take on this demanding role.
Rod is a chemistry teacher at large Norwich secondary school and has been involved in amateur rocketry for ten years; he makes good use of his interest as a teaching aid and has twice steered his school team to the finals of the UK Aerospace Youth Rocketry Challenge. In 2003 he was chosen to visit the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida to train for a week with their education department.
Additionally he is Chair of the East Anglian Rocketry Society, is Vice Chair of the Space Education Council, organises rocketry INSET programmes for the Norfolk Education Department, is a training officer for the East of England Science Learning Centre and has served on a number of advisory committees to the Department of Trade and Industry and the National Space Centre on space education.
For the past four years Rod has also been involved in the organisation of the British Rocketry Oral History Programme as was – now the United Kingdom Space Conference – based at Charterhouse school in Godalming, Surrey.
